Magnox North Celebrates Success in ‘Idea of the Year’

Magnox North is celebrating after being unveiled as the winner of the ‘Productivity Category’ in the ‘Idea of the Year’ competition 2009.

The winners, from Magnox North’s Oldbury Power Station, were presented with the award for their work in using an innovative approach to repairing plant whilst Oldbury Power Station was still operational– avoiding the need to shut-down and saving £3.5m

Nigel Millington, Andy Smart and Pete Bull, who worked on the project, were delighted to receive the award. Nigel Spoke on behalf of the team and said: “It is fantastic to be recognised for our innovative approach, amongst our peers from outside the nuclear industry. Magnox North is renowned for innovation and opportunity management, but to lift this award when up against competition from the UK’s top companies is a real accolade”

Magnox North manages five of the first generation of nuclear power stations on behalf of the UK Government’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Four of the ideas entered by the company reached the finals of the competition which is run by Ideas UK.

All these ideas which have been implemented to improve safe delivery in electricity generation and decommissioning, were developed through the company’s own suggestion scheme, i4 (Inspire, Imagine, Innovate, Implement), which was introduced by EnergySolutions – Magnox North’s parent body organisation.

Alan Parker, Chief Operating Officer for EnergySolutions International Group, said: “Innovation is essential to reaching our goal of safe delivery and to providing value to the UK taxpayer.”
