Monday 18 May 2009Nuclear Supply Chain Takes a Look into the Future
Magnox North and Magnox South – the companies responsible for operating and decommissioning the UK’s oldest nuclear power stations – met with over 100 representatives of its supply chain in Manchester this week to discuss opportunities for work and the future of the business.
Magnox North delivered a £380m programme of work last year and the supply chain was responsible for running around two thirds of the projects. In addition, Magnox South placed £100m worth of work with the supply chain in 2008/09.
The event was attended by the companies’ top 50 suppliers, including: AMEC, Morson Projects, VT Nuclear and BNS Nuclear Services. The delegates were given a look at the type of work which is on the horizon and were then given the opportunity – through a series of working groups – to shape the way the Magnox businesses work with the supply chain.
Neil Baldwin, Managing Director of Magnox North said: “Our supply chain is essential in helping us with our decommissioning and electricity generation work – Innovation by the supply chain is the key to help us deliver value to the UK taxpayer.”
Magnox South’s Managing Director, Mark Lesinski, described some of the opportunities coming up over the next few years which will be instrumental in taking forward the decommissioning and hazard reduction at the Nuclear Licensed Sites across the south of England.
To tie-in with the event, Magnox North has launched the suppliers section of its website, where companies can find out about upcoming contracts including the value of the work being placed by Magnox North.
Ron Gorham, Head of Supply Chain Optimisation, from UK government’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, which owns the Magnox sites, said: “I want to see contractors who are successful in working not only across the NDA estate, but across the UK nuclear industry as a whole. I am particularly keen that all levels of the Supply Chain seek to be a ‘Good Client. We are striving towards national solutions for national problems whether that’s for waste management, or improving the consistency of procurement processes across the estate and making our market more attractive to the Supply Chain.”
