Trawsfynydd

Phil Sprague, Trawsfynydd Site Director

Phil brings to the job nearly 25 years experience of engineering and technology in the power industry. He first visited Trawsfynydd when he worked on the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) safety case in the 1990’s.
He joined the Central Electricity Generating Board in 1983 at the south-east region Scientific Services laboratories in Gravesend and was involved with measuring and controlling air pollution from fossil-fired power stations. In 1986 he moved to the north-west Scientific Services Department at Wythenshawe and worked on the boiler rig, carrying out research and corrosion studies on Wylfa and on AGRs, and it was at this time that he worked on the RPV safety case for Trawsfynydd.

In 1994 Phil went to Berkeley and continued to work on engineering projects at sites such as the Dungeness B superheater header project and Magnox RPV safety cases. Subsequently, as head of Remote Operations, he was involved in the pressure insulation project at Hinkley and numerous other sites in reactor inspection and repair projects that the team were running.

He spent the next six years as manager of the Littlebrook site, during which time he managed the design and construction of the header restraints at Wylfa. He came to know Wylfa even better after being appointed customer project manager for the new Reactor Services organisation, when he was transferred to the site and took responsibility for running the projects there, including the long term and periodic safety reviews. He then moved to Oldbury as decommissioning manager, later becoming business manager and – most recently – head of the Project Delivery Organisation (PDO).

Phil is the junior head coach at Dursley Rugby Club near Gloucester and he coaches the under 15 side.
